As a school community with pupils, parents and staff who speak over 40 different languages, we truly value the importance of learning a foreign language.
At Spring Grove Primary School French is introduced to children in Key Stage 1 in short 10-15 minutes sessions. In Key Stage 2 children receive approximately one hour’s language teaching each week. When possible, a foreign language assistant works alongside the class teacher to deliver the lessons. We aim to make cross curricular links whenever possible in order to enrich the learning experience of the children.
The curriculum is based on the Rigolo scheme of work which aims to develop the learning of French throughout KS2. The curriculum is enriched through a range of resources including the use of stimulating French children’s books, songs, French newspapers and correspondence from our link school in Paris.
NC Aims
The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
Link School in France
We are linked with a primary school in Paris, France. Our pupils communicate with their peers in France and work on joint projects. We send and receive letters and cards; partake in video-conferences; use Google Docs for joint work; or email to share photos and videos.
Teachers have also visited one another’s schools in order to plan and prepare joint projects.
We use the E-Twinning platform to host video-conferences.

Year 6 Residential to France
The children stay at a chateau in the town of Rue, set in the beautiful countryside of northern France. They take part in a range of activities led by French natives. Not only do the children manage to practise and develop their language skills, but they are immersed in the French culture.
Visits include:
Farm visit: milk a cow and make cream; market visit to order items in French and spend Euros pocketmoney; history tour of Rue; visit a sea-life centre learning about the local fishing industry; play typical French games e.g. Petanque; make croissants at a bakery…
